Ten Themes for SharePoint in VSeWSS Projects

Apr 022009

A couple of days ago Microsoft released 10 themes for SharePoint. They provided solutions for you, so that you can build features to install and deploy the themes on your SharePoint farm. The problem with the provided themes is, that they are only meant to be installed on English SharePoint sites! The path to the images is hard coded to the English LCID.

Daniel Brown has already created a solution which you can install. His solution has the same limitation with the language as the provided sample by Microsoft.

If you do not want to build the solutions, use mine. I’ve wrapped all 10 themes in one solution, which can be installed with a setup program.

Changes I made:

  • themes are not language specific anymore
  • all themes can be installed and activated with one feature
  • the themes are available for every installed language in your farm

Install Instructions:

  1. Make sure you have the .NET framework 3.5 installed on all your SharePoint servers!
  2. Install the solution with the setup program (or via stsadm. The wsp file is in the zip file)
  3. The feature should be activated after installation
  4. Choose the theme you like in the site settings of your web (each site can have a different theme)

Update

The setup required MOSS. I’ve changed that. The solution could always be installed on WSS only SharePoint farms, but the installer complained. Sorry about that :-(

Hello Rene,

Awesome solution! I have these templates running in my part dutch, part english SP. Also your installer and feature enabling actually works a step better then the solution from Daniel.

Good work, I'm still figuring out which template I like best... I love the start-up navigation, but it's a bit distracting for an intranet :/

Typical MS SharePoint: they put something out there but 50% has to be rebuild by us/the community, because it just lacks a few things.

Thank you for providing this great solution. I just ran into 1 small problem when I ran the setup program.

I only have SharePoint 3.0 services installed on my server, and the install program states that I cannot proceed with the install because I do not have SP Server 2007 installed. Do I need SP 2007 to add the themes?

Hi Fancis,
WSS V3 is all you need. I've installed the themes on this site.

We successfully installed these using your solution on our stand alone test server and the users liked the new themes. However, we have problem on the MOSS farm: x642 WFE on NLB, Index Server, SQL Active/Passive 2K5 cluster.
I see the folders on the WFE's Themes folder but we don't see them in the choices for themes.
Any suggestions to for the deployment? Maybe remove,delete,re-install?

Hi Wayne,
do the templates appear in the "TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\xyz\SPTHEMES.XML" file?
If so, try a iisreset.

not in the 1033 folder I am looking at.So I am assuming that is what is being "read" when we try to display the list of themes.

I have fixed the problem: it didn't fully install on one WFE: I copied the spthemes.xml over from the WFE that did have them listed and all is well.
Thanks for your time for both troubleshooting and creating the solution.

Excellent work. Thank you. I especially like the EULA! I just wish MS could make their products install this easily.

Hmmm... The install worked as I was able to see the feature installed and activated at the farm level in CA. I also double-checked that I have .NET 3.5.

However, I am not able to see the themes in the theme listing. I see the themes in "...\12\TEMPLATE\THEMES", they are listed in "spthemes.xml", yet I cannot see them in the theme listing when I go to select them.

I did your install after I uninstalled Daniel's solution -- could there be some lingering effects from his uninstall. I was also able to see and activate the same themes after his install, tho I was still unable to see them in the themes list.

Hmmm... Any ideas??

I really would like to use these themes -- thanks for your solution and support.

Hi Chris,
this is strange. If the farm feature is activated, the themes should be listed on every site.
I have no clue why they will not show up on your SharePoint.
